In early 1980, John Beland became a member of the band and started having more and more influence on their output and direction.
John Beland had a strong pedigree, having played with Kris Kristofferson, Glenn Frey, Bernie Leadon, Johnny Darrell, Larry Murray, Linda Ronstadt, Swampwater, Arlo Guthrie, Johnny Tillotson, The Bellamy Brothers, Mac Davis, Dolly Parton, Rick Nelson, The Backporch Majority, Kim Carnes, Nicolette Larson, Bobby Bare, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Ricky Skaggs, Buck Owens, The Oakridge Boys, Charlie Louvin and more. He also released solo singles and albums (including instrumental ones) and wrote songs for tens of well-know artists.
