A song written by Bob Dylan in January 1963 for his third album (The Times They Are A-Changin’), it didn’t make the final release and was only available on bootlegs until it was finally officially released in October 2010 on “The Bootleg Series Vol. 9 – The Witmark Demos: 1962–1964”, simply titled « Farewell ».

The first released version was by Anita (and Helen) Carter in February 1964 (track #2).

Depending on the artist and the release, the song is either titled “Farewell” or “Fare Thee Well”.

Dylan based the song on the traditional British folk ballad "Leaving Of Liverpool".

Not to be mistaken for another song titled “Fare Thee Well”, aka “Dink’s Song”, aka “If I Had Wings”, which was also sung by Bob Dylan but not written by him.

The first released version was by Doug Sahm in 1972, on his first solo LP after leaving The Sir Douglas Quintet. Actually, it is a duet with Bob Dylan singing backing/second lead vocal on that version (track #2 here).

An alternate version by Bob Dylan from the 1971 sessions appeared in 2013 on “The Bootleg Series Vol. 10 – Another Self Portrait” (track #20 here).
