A song written by Bob Dylan in 1964, it first appeared on a single by the U.K. group The Liverpool Five in July 1965, but it didn’t meet with success. A version by Manfred Mann was a huge hit in September 1965. Fairport Convention was the second band to chart with the song but in a French lyrics version titled “Si Tu Dois Partir”.

One of the first versions by the author, recorded in January 1965, was released on a single in The Netherlands only in January 1967, coupled with “To Ramona”, but it didn’t chart. One had to wait another 24 years before another early take was included in Dylan’s triple album “The Bootleg Series Vol. 1-3” in 1991.
